NTU Bike Fest 2014!

On 13 & 14 March 2014, NTU Rider’s Club has once again come up with NTU Bike Fest to info-tain the student population about traffic safety, NTU Rider’s Club and Riding in general.

Exhibitors for this year included NRC, BBDC, Komoco Motors (Harley Davidson), Helmet Boys, Wingyap Motors and Redbull Singapore. The event garnered a lot of interest from passerbys, and we were constantly encouraging them to try the Simulators brought in by BBDC that emphasize on the importance of staying away from drink driving, and to take pictures of the various bikes available or just chat about motorcycles in general.

Here are some photos during our 2 days event!

Advance Safety Riding Course (ASRC) 2014

On the 20 December 2014, 7 riders from NTU and NTU alumni reported to SSDC to embark on a course that was unforgettable. Contradictory to many people’s belief that safety course would be full of theories; SSDC has proven to the participants that this course is full of action and fun.
The day began with Instructor Ali and Imam giving us on the statistic of the number of accident, the fatality rate and cause of accident involving riders. It was a very brief session that lasted only 30 minutes, however it has made us realize how important and vulnerable we are on the road.
We then proceeded to level 5, where Instructor Ali introduced some pre-ride check and technique in lifting up a bike. As a P-plate myself, I was astonished at how ignorant I was, and thank to Instructor Ali, I have learn many pre-ride check that was previously not taught by anyone.

After much talking, the riders got onto their respective bikes and began the action-filled course. It was unforgettable as the participants were able to practice various cornering technique such as lean in, lean out, and lean with in figure 8 and crank course. It is often that we hear and see such techniques on theory book while preparing for our theory test, but how often would we have the opportunity to learn it properly and feel the difference?

After cornering techniques, we were exposed to “fish-tailing” while doing emergency brake. Fish tailing in normal circumstances is very dangerous as we may lost control of our bike and result in accident. Therefore, we were all quite hesitant to try it. However, with the patience the instructors, we were able to practice and recover our bikes from fish tail. It was really exciting and where else could we do this safely and without hurting our tyres except at SSDC?

The most enjoyable activity of the day would be the off-set slalom which Instructor Ali set up with cones that really test the cornering skills we have learn earlier in the day. To fuel up the excitement, Instructor Ali and Iman were chasing behind our back while we were doing our course.
The Advancing Safety Riding Course was a success and it provides the opportunity to interact with instructors, practice our skills and learn many techniques.

Speaking from own experience, it would have been disastrous if I did not attend this course as I had my own fish tail experience when a van cut into my lane. It was the knowledge and instinct and probably some muscle memory that allowed me to recover my fish tail and evaded the accident.

Lastly, I would like to thank SSDC and most importantly Mr Ali and Mr Imam for your guidance throughout the course!

NRC Charity Bike Wash 2014

A very BIG thank you to all who came down to support our Charity Bike Wash held last Saturday! It was a great success!

A total of S$906 was raised for the Cerebral Palsy Association of Singapore (CPAS) and we are please to inform that the full amount raised was donated back to CPAS with all the cost for this event borne by NTU Rider's Club.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors who make this event possible;
Pure Hand Wash - who provided all the washing equipments.
WingYap Motors - who provided the three battery prizes.
Simplybikes - who provided us with motorbike apparels.
Bike Studio - who was kind in giving out plenty of servicing vouchers
Heidenau - in providing a great discount for their tyres
Without their generous sponsors, our event would not have went as well.

We would also like to thank those bike groups who took their time off to support our event, such as;
Bikers Aid International
SYM OWNERS GROUP SINGAPORE
Scuderia Diavolo Rosso
Railway Boys
Team Madness Racing
Team Mentari
Team Attitude
FZ16Singapore
1DTO
and many other generous bikers.

Your continuous support was essential for us to reach our target in raising funds for the Cerebral Palsy Association of Singapore. And for that, on behalf of CPAS, we would like to say a big thank you once again!

And last but not least, I would like to thank the current and former NTU Rider's Club Exco team for your hardwork and unconditional effort that was put forth in providing the best service that you could give in the name of charity. I'm sure the wrinkled fingers and backaches was all worth it for the smiles of all the residents back at Cerebral Palsy Association of Singapore. And for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Let this event not be the last, but the first of many to help those who are less fortunate than us. We hope to see you guys again soon!

Ride safe and god bless!

Sincerely,
Muhd Zulfadhli Hairi
